99 Songs is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language musical romance film directed by Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy, and co-written and produced by A. R. Rahman, who thus makes his debut in both roles, apart from composing the original score and songs. The film stars debutants Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas in lead roles, alongside Aditya Seal, Riya and Manisha Koirala among others portray supporting characters. The film is a sensual story about art and self-discovery of a struggling singer who wants to be a successful music composer.

This film is such a pleasant surprise & celebration to all the maestro's fans, coz it has turned the composer to a writer as well as producer too. Let him try his luck, all his fans are waiting for it's success, even Am one of them.  This film being multi-lingual has featured 13 songs unlike the movies' title. Talking about the music, it is interesting to find too many genres & new singers too, so with no delay let's fare the album.

01. Teri Nazar

Vocalist: Shashwaath Singh
Lyricists: Dilshaad Shabbir Shaik & Navneeth Virk
Rating: 3/5

Such a cool song in Sufi style which has Rahman's template written all over the song. In this times where the originality of music has already become extinct, Rahman surprises with this amazing song which evokes such a great feeling. It is absolutely fresh & takes back to the memory lane of 90's. If the lyricists did their job, Shashwaath Singh proves that he can curb the hearts of listeners with his kind of rendition. Rahman is always fond of peculiar instrumentation, this song isn't an exception, a backdrop iterating the pain intoxicated by "love" is always a special one to any composer or performers to act, like usually such number is engraved with electrical guitars & high voltage renditions but contrary to everything this is a soft sufi styled melody set in "Chaarukesi Raagam", all these are purely Rahman's things!! Let it be the instrumentation, vocals or lyrics or tune, everything is fresh& original. A good song indeed.

02. Jwaalamukhi- Female Version

Vocalist: Poorvi Koutish
Lyricist: Navneeth Virk
Rating: 2.5/5

We all know what it has done to records & charts playing. Rahman is a genius he knows very well how to utilize the words with his rustic instrumentation. "Jwaalamukhi" is a word that evokes a rum feeling listening to it, but this tune is so well set with rich percussion that'll take away all that feeling. Don't know what can be the backdrop, but this will surely have an impact with visuals. Poorvi, that "Ruby Ruby" singer with a sensuous tone makes a potent impact here, that crescendo at end is a solid proof for her prolific rendition. As I keep, telling this maestro knows well, which singers suits the best to a particular genre. One more praiseworthy song in my opinion.

03. Oo Aashiqaa

Vocalist: Shashwaath Singh
Lyricist: Navneeth Virk
Rating: 3.5/5

When the hero falls for her girl & when the girl is a muse to him, then what kind of music you make?? Probably we'll go with a melody with a jazz, but if you ask Rahman he would answer that he would compose a mellow tune which balances jazz & Indian Classical. He's a genius, a known fact!! This song has every emotion woven too perfectly in it. Once the interlude begins one starts wondering where the song would go, it is damn good. Orchestration is beyond expression, Shashwaath is a boon to the song, he has all the embryonic skill to become a successful singer in near future, he is just amazing!! Just nothing more about this track, just enjoy the essence of the number.

- singer "Shaashwath Singh"

04. Jwaalamukhi- Male Version

Vocalist: Arijith Singh
Lyricist: Navneeth Virk
Rating: 3/5

A number with rapturous feelings deserves a male version too, however this was the one which came out first. Arijith Singh on the board with Rahman at the helm, what more can a music lover expect for, such a deadly combination which always brought all the houses down. "Jwaalamukhi" has the fury in the song too like it's title, Rahman made sure that his orchestration evoked such feeling in the listeners. However, Arijith & Rahman, nevertheless they are magical. When there are two versions comparisons are common, choosing one among the two is difficult, one goes well with splendid orchestration & both versions getting the adroit artists.

05. The Oracle

Instrumental
Rating: 3/5

A piece of music which had all the knack in it!! So enduring & pleasant. Rahman kills it at each note, if you love music then surely it touches your heart, no doubt in it. There is always a classic touch in any of his compositions, if that classicism or style is made into a tune this is how it sounds. Enjoy the track!! This is the first track that came out as a treat to all the music lovers.

06. Sofia

Vocalist: Shashwaath Singh
Additional Vocalists: Arjun Chandy & Leon D'suoza
Lyricist: Navneeth Virk
Rating: 2/5

A cool romantic ballad. Every note touching the perfection makes it something spesh. Navneeth makes it sound more like a present-day song with his hi-tech words. Rahman just puts himself in a cage for this song, it lacks fresh, instrumentation is formulated. However the harmony at the end of the song is a bliss, thanks to Arjun Chandy.Yet song lies on a boring side, may work on loops.

07. Nayi Nayi

Vocalists: Raftaar & Shashwaath singh
Lyricists: Navneeth Virk & Raftaar
Rating: 2.5/5

Here's a fast paced song going into a genre of rock & pop. As this album is a mixture of genres, we are introduced to different forms of music in Rahman's template. Raftaar taking the lead of all the rap portions & Shashwaath adds all the charm with his cherubic voice. As the title "Nayi Nayi", song alsosounds "Nayi Nayi". A song that can click on for time being yet has all the originality.

08. Humnaawa

Vocalists: Armaan Maalik & Shahaasha Tripati
Lyricists: Dilshad Shabbir Shaik & Abhay Jodhpurak
Rating: 2/5

A song which is once again a pure romantic ballad with all the keyboard notes getting a lead role. I think Shahaasha would have been breathless crooning this track, she tells us in this track why she has been a national awardee. Her humming is just out of the world, Armaan with his mellifluous voice hums the song, that is what he is supposed to do, then Shahaasha follows him with a utterly melodious tone making the combination a great hit. Rahman is the only composer who could guarantee such songs even till date, they are fresh , amazing & original. Thank you for happening to us & treating us with this album. A song that might be on a toss for yayy or nahh!! coz, it depends on listener's choice .

09. Soja Soja

Vocalist: Shahaasha Tripati
Lyricist: Navneeth Virk
Rating: 3/5

What we all are taken too in this number?? Such a rustic song which has a ample amount of wit written all over the track. Rahman makes it sound as droll as it can be with a dedicated sound which makes us fall in trap & believe all that's happening. Shahaasha should get all the prizes for singing such different number. The pre-lude is just a sample to showcase that song may not be the same as it comes to end.  Truly a different number. Just give it a try, to explore a completely new style of music.

10. Sai Shiridi Sai

Vocalists: A. R, Rahman & Bela Shende
Lyricists: Munna Shukat & Navneeth Virk
Rating: 3/5

Here's a spiritual track that has all the divinity to take you directly to the almighty's presence. Bela Shende & Rahman put up a devotional show which is set in a typical Sufi style. I thought this would bring back Alka Yagnik or Sadhnaa Sargum to croon, but Bela sounds damn cool.  Rahman is king of harmonies, he can just fuse anything & the result is extraordinary. This track deserves an award for sure, it can just take us through all those montage shots & pure spirituality. It's not just a song, it is more than a chanting & prayer.

- singer "Bela Shende"

11. Gori Godh Bhari

Vocalists: Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Sriram & Shwetha Mohan
Lyricist: Navneeth Virk
Rating: 2.5/5

Here's a classical track in Rahman's style like usual. A Sarod, Saarangi & Tabla taking lead of the instrumentation makes it a ear-feast. Alka ji's voice has an enduring affect which can make us forget the world & Anuradha Sriram, Shwetha adding on is nothing less than a masterpiece, their top notch renditions make the song a classic, composed in Baagheshri raagam. Rahman has'nt changed, he will'nt, he'll keep making us fall in awe for him each & every time he composes for us. Classical music lovers, will enjoy this.

- singer "Alka Yagnik"

12. Oo Mere Chaand

Vocalist: Bela Shende
Lyricist: Navneeth Virk
Rating: 3/5

It's like an extended version of "Sai Shiridi Sai", a perfect lullaby with flute taking the lead of instrumentation. Navneeth is so good, his lyrics are making songs even better. Like told, Bela brings in a flavor of Saadhnaa Sargum, she is amazing & her rendition is too sweet. This song is like that morning drizzle of honey due drops. Nothing more, just enjoy it's essence.

13. Veer Kadh De

Vocalists: Sarkath Kalyani & Swagath Rathode
Lyricist: Navneeth virk
Rating: 2/5

Here's a dance number for all, punjabi beats fused with Hip-Hop, & this is the result. I can quote it as a desi anthem with western orchestration. Do you love folk beats & rustic tunes? then here's a recommendation.

14. The Voice Without Words

Vocalists: Poorvi Koutish
Lyricist: Navneeth Virk
Rating: 2/5

An extension of "Jwaalamukhi", though song has got it's pace. Onceyou listen to this, the comment would be "Haven't anything like this before", it's so good, fresh & original. Poorvi keeps uttering few words with a husky tone & the "Jwaalamukhi" instrumentation reappears, it's new, different & great. Kuddos Rahman Sir.

Picks Of The Album: Oo Aashiqa, Jwaalamukhi (Both Versions) , Teri Nazar & Sai Shiridi Sai

OVERALL RATING: 6/10

Remarks: "A classic"!!
