Movie: Ok Jaanu (2017)

Director: Shaad Ali

Producers: Mani Ratnam, Karan Johar, Apoorva & Hiro Yash Johar

Music: A.R.Rahman

OK Jaanu is a 2017 Indian romantic drama film directed by Shaad Ali, story and screenplay by Mani Ratnam. Produced by Mani Ratnam and Karan Johar under their banners Madras Talkies and Dharma Productions respectively. It is an official remake of Mani Ratnam's Tamil film O Kadhal Kanmani starring Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen. The film stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles, portraying a young couple in a live-in relationship in Mumbai with Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson play supporting roles as an older couple in the film, portraying the younger couple's landlords.A. R. Rahman composed the film's score and soundtrack. Gulzar is the dialogue writer of this film. Gulzar has also written the lyrics for the songs in the film. Rahman reused almost all the tracks from original picture with exception of three songs. He composed two new songs for the film which are the Hindi counterparts of "Aye Sinamika" and "Malargal Kaetten" that were part of Tamil version. The Hindi counterpart of "Parandhu Sella Vaa" is a cover version of Rahman's yesteryear classic "Humma Humma" from the 1995 movie Mani Ratnam's Bombay. Dubbed as "The Humma Song", the cover was done by Badshah and Tanishk Bagchi.

1. The Humma Song (Remix)

Singers:  Jubin Nautyal, Shasha Tripati & Tanshik
Lyrics: Mehaboob
Rap: Badshah
Rating:4/5

This is a recreation of the yester decade's super hit "Humma Humma" composed by Rahman for the film "Bombay" in 1995. When ever recreations or remixes are done, they should not take away the soul of the song. Here, this recreation is finely covered by Badshah and Tanishk, but they did'nt take the song up to Rahman's standard version. In the earlier version there is a dark throughty instrumentation and heavy usage of recorder(flute), shehanayi, tabala etc. But here we find only usage of Shehanayi which took away the soul of original, but its enough good to connect to present generation. The vocals provided by Jubin and Shasha serve as icing on hot fire. They were so frail and dull, they were not upto the mark where Remo Fernandes & Mano took us in the original version. But the interlude at last was a highlight. However song was quiet tolerable, neatly presented without any comparision to the original.

2. Ok Jaanu (Title Track)

Singers: A.R.Rahman, Srinidhi Venkatesh
Lyrics: Gulzar
Rating: 5/5

What else could we think of, when the vocals are provided by legend himself. Rahman was perfect tee to the song. The energy, the voice, the expression he evokes is unbeatable, especially the high pitch note shows his power. This song sounds good than the tamil version, may be due to Rahman working at the vocals, I guess. The lyrics are also provided by a legendary lyricist Gulzar Saahab, this combo never fails to steal our hearts. Srinidhi was good at her provision. The instrumentation was heavy, trendy and peppy, making the youth swing their heads, tap their feet and whistle in the air. The song could be no where better, Rahman should be credited for this masterpiece.

3. Enna Sona

Singers: Arijith Singh
Lyrics: Gulzar
Rating: 5/5

Here comes the voice of youth, Arijith Singh!!What a voice, what an expression, what a singing?take a bow!! This song again proves that Arijith is the king of romantic songs. The way he expresses steals our heart, wspecially in the second stanza when he reaches the higher notes. Arijith has some ethereal quality in his voice & he uses it to the full extinct in this cute romantic song. Gulzar sahaab has given amazing lyrics, the prounciation of "Sonna", "Enna" makes it sound like punjabi's accent, which is plesant to hear. Rahman creates a new tune for this movie and gives his best. The interlude with a mild flute was amazing. This song is replaced in place of "Aye Sinamika" sung by Karthik in tamil.

4. Jee Lein

Singers: A.R.Rahman, Arjun Candy, Neeti Mohan & Savitri R Pruthvi
Lyrics:  Gulzar
Rating: 5/5

This is another romantic peppy song. This song is composed in a different genre, it sounds angelic whenever the word "Jee Lein" comes irrespectively who ever sings it. Its an amazing song with beautiful trendy instrumentation and a mix of veena in between. Gulzar saahab proves why he is a legend, there is no problem with the lyric , though the tune was from a tamil film, Gulzar Saahab perfectly matched to the tee. Now its time to give away all praises to Rahman,an extrodinary composition, which transfers us into a new era created by Rahman. All the vocalists did a good job.

5. Kaara Fankaara

Singers: Kaly, Hard kaur, ADK, Shasha Tripati, Ashima Mahajan & Paroma Das Gupta
Lyrics: Navneet Virk, Hard Kaur, Kaly & ADK
Rating: 5/5

A song with rap as its genre. An youthful song excellent in all aspects. When we find too many singers, for one song, it is difficult to credit which vocalist. However the same vocalists were involved in lyric writing also. Here they had a english rap which sounds too good, because tamil version included rap in tamil itself, rap sounds good in english only. Shasha goes on crooning "Kaara Fankaara" which sounds amazing. The chorus of "Naa naa namamane kri kiri" etc was effectively sung. However Rahman finds place in the song to prove himself like sugar finds its place in glass filled with milk. Rahman is like that sugar, superb instrumentation, there wont be any of Rahman's songs where he cant be praised for his wonderful instrumentation. The instruments like drums, some rrecorders, heavy beats find an intresting space in listeners hearts.

6. Saajan Aayo Re

Singers: Jonita Gandhi & Nakash aziz
Lyrics: Gulzar
Rating: 5/5

It is a hindustani semi-classical which most probably sounds like a ghazal. It is very intresting to listen to the classical vocals and trendy instrumentation, Purely Rahman things. Jonita Gandhi always finds a place in almost all Rahman's album, like Chitra in frequent times. Jonita sounds outstanding, she was too good. Nakash Aziz was limited to few surgam portions and two three lines at the end, but though his part was minimal he sounded amazing. But the winner would be Jonita, for an effortless singing. Rahman uses all sorts of things to make the song sound classical as well as youthful. Only the singing aws classical, where as Rahman used haevy beats for the background to make it sound youthful and a flute type of thing and he even used tabla to make it sound classical.

7. Maulaya Salim (Traditional)

Singer: A.R.Ameen
Rating: 4.5/5

Here comes A.R.Ameen, Rahman's son making way through the film industry. This is just placed as it is from the tamil version. Its a devotional song for muslims, which is perfectly sung by Ameen, he sounds cute and sweet, innocent making the song sound with a devine feel. Ameen might probably find his way in industry in future, he has good singing capabilites. Rahman limits his instrumentation giving space for the vocals. He uses only a soft devine full veena string which cathes the situation.

8. Sun Sun Bhavra

Singer: Shasha Tripati
Lyrics: Gulzar
Rating: 4/5

Here is a hindustani classical song, which is perfect in its means. Gulzar and Rahman were absolutley fine, as usually. This is a new tune which is used in replacement of awarded carnatic classical "Malargal Kaeeten" sung by Chitra in tamil version. Here Shasha gets her third song, which belongs only to her. But I wished Rahman has brought Chitraji only for this song. Because she sounded stupendous in "Malargal Kaeeten". Shasha was also good but she sounds dull, energyless and husky, Shasha makes it a bit romantic with her nasal voice and lacks energy. If Chitra was made to sing this song , she would take to where it belongs. However its just a small comparision, even Shasha sounded great. Rahman uses tabala all over the song, but however it could'nt give the feel what "Malargal Kaeeten" gave.

Picks Of The Album: Entire Album

OVERALL RATING: 9.8/10

Remarks: An amazing album by Rahmanji. After so many days a full fleged album by Rahman. This album was highly successful in Tamil, same repeated here. Rahman never fails to entertain the listeners. This would be first album, that I rated 5/5 for almost all the songs in the album. Gulzar Saahab & Rahman would be the best combo in bollywood. Loved all the songs.

This is a remake of tamil fim "O Kaadal Kanmani" directed by star director Maniratnam with a good message. "SAY NO TO LIVING RELATIONSHIPS" , now a days we Indians are much influenzed by foreign culture, our dressing style, eating habits, conversation etc, but let us say no to this living relationships, we Indian's have a good culture and rich heritage respecting marriage and love, so their should be true lovers and best couples, but no people in relationships. It sounds awkward to date a person and break the bond with them for time being and searching another person for date. So, it should be learnt that we should have true love and best couple rather getting influenzed to foriegn cultures.
