Movie: Rudramadevi (2015)
Director: Gunasekhar
Music: Ilayaraja
Cast: Anushka, Rana, Nithya Menon, Allu Arjun, Catherine, Krishnam Raju, Prakash Raj & Others
Lyrics: Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry
Gunasekhar known for his passion for recreating magic with sets be it okkadu or Arjun, creating movies like choodalani undi or sogasu chooda tarama, comes up with first Stereo 3D movie of India called "Rudrama Devi". He says the reason for making this movie is the passion of the story of Rani Rudrama Devi which everyone in Andhra Pradesh reads about. The passion made him spend 60-70 crores to make this film and add best technicians to this movie in music, lyrics editing, photgraphy, art and other departments. He is also casting Krishnam Raju, Rana, Allu arjun and many more actors in this movie along with Anushka.
A historic movie always needs much grandeur and Gunasekhar is said to have not compromised at all for the movie. He took long enough time to make this movie and worked innumerous hours to see the product thru, He completely dedicated along with his family for this movie just to see his passion come through the screen and make it to theaters. Finally he sees light and releases audio on two days 3 songs at Visakhapatnam and 3 songs in Warangal where Rani Rudrama Devi ruled. The audio release function was made as public function and the support he got from crowd would have made sure that he will get enough support with the movie from Public. For sure there is lot of sentiment for Rudrama Devi and if the movie is well made to reach viewers then all the hardwork Gunasekhar has put it will get what it is due.
Ilayaraja who completed 1000 movie mark, lately with Shamitabh showed why he is considered as GOD of Music. His fans will take 1000 more movies if he can give. With such a grand movie, none other than Ilayaraja can do justice to the back ground score. This kind of historical movies need support from music department a lot to carry right emotions. And Gunasekhar did right thing to rope him in. That would be one less worry for him. Then he did other best thing is to add Sirivennela garu as single card lyricists. And currently no one can do better justice other than Sirivennela garu. Having said that all Gunasekhar has to do if all have a choice is to pick right singers.otal six songs, out of which one bit song, two duets, one item song and the rest is situation based. Lets see how songs fared.
1. Mathagajame
Singers: S.P.Balasubrahmanyam, K.S.Chitra, Khailash Kher & Chorus
Rating: 4/5
The first song opens up with a huge grandeour and spectaruclarity. What a grand way start a song?Only Ilayaraja can do this kind of things. When it comes to an historical movie who else can make the song so grand, unless its Ilayaraja. Khailash Kher starts the song with some kingly jests and then the song starts singing "Mathagajame" and joins the chorus, then there is a tamil flavour in between given by the chorus which is a highlight of the song. Then comes the voice after 2 minutes of the song-SPB starts singing "Telugula Veluguvai" with Khailash and then joins the sweetest voice of Chitra and then the chorus and at last all together sing Mathagajame. Complete 6 minutes of song Ilayaraja takes us into that historical world where Rudrama lived. Seethrama Sastry's lyrics are always awsome, I have no right to comment on his lyric, he is amazing suit to the song. The leading duo in telugu film industry or tamil is SPB-Chitra, when they come together what else can anyone expect from Ilayaraja for the title track. They never fail to trap our hearts, and here also they do the same. This generation must be lucky enough to yet listen to SPB-Chitra-Ilayaraja-Sastry's combo.
2. Avuna Neevena
Singers: Hariharan & Sadhana Sargam
Rating: 4/5
The next song is a romantic melody filled with lot of magic, honey, sweetness and everything that pleases our ears. This type of songs are Ilayaraja's trademark melodies and he is just the king in this, no one can replace him. The lyrics given by Sastry garu are amazing. The violen all over the song sounds good then joins tabala in between and at last the second interlude is just there to kill us, its so beautifully weaved with violens. The vocals provided by singers just fail to entertain us, because Hariharan sounds so nasal and even has lot of pronounciation issues like he says sinply "Nidi" instead of "Nidhi" , this type of things losen the nativity in language, the effort of sastry garu is overlooked due to poor dedication of singers towards the language. Sadhana Sargam is completely in out of form, she sounds horrible in the melody, no expression, no proper diction, she just goes on looping the song and completely nakes us to stay out of it. The only reason to listen to this song is Ilayaraja's magic and Sastry garu's lyric. This song can be awarded 5/5 but singers took away the other point.
3. Choosukovo Teesukovo
Singers: K.S.Chitra & Baba Seghal
Rating: 5/5
An item song in historical film makes us feel awkward, but that feel is lost when we listen to the song. It sounds outdated for latest listeners but it could be no way better, Ilayaraja gave the correct music for an historical item song. Sastry garu exactly knows how to right the words indirectly instead of writing them directly by including words like "Vindu undoyi pondu undoyi, gupitlo nee guttu pattukovoi" etc. Chitra is the highlight of the song, no other present item song singers can match the expression that Chitra mam gave, what a singing, what an expression, what a voice? madam take a bow!!This song is sung by Chitra, Iam saying it again because Chitra changes the way she sings usually and perfectly suits to tee. This is the second song for Chitra in this album. So by this she proves(She already proved), that she is a versatile singer and can sing any genre with superb ease. Baba seghal limits to few typicall words and excells in uttering them.
4.Punnami Poovayi
Singers: Shreya Ghoshal & Chorus
Rating: 4.5/5
Again Ilayaraja spills magic all over the song. What a composition, what a tune, what an instrumentation? excellent!!. What a lyric Sastry garu?!!..Take a bow for both of you. Its a simple female lead melody which sounds stupendous. Shreya Ghoshal is always the princess behind the screen, she sounded angelic, amazing, soft and sweet. But she has low energy and sounds very low, cautious and nervous. If Chitra would have got this song she would take it to where it belongs. But Shreya also sounded great, its just a small comparision.
5. Allakallolamai Desham
Singers: S.P.Balasubrahmanyam
Rating: 5/5
When SPB-Ilayaraja-Sirivennela come together what else can anyone expect? Its a treat to listen to SPB. The emotion that he evokes sounds absoulutley right. What can anyone tell about him?But this song finds its place somewhere in mid 80's where we can hear lot of these songs. The beats are similar to the song "Cheppalani Undi" in Rudraveena film, where this 3 legends only created the song.
6. Anthahpuramlo
Singers: K.S.Chitra, Sadhana Sargam & Chinmaye
Rating: 4.5/5
Same magic again recreated by Raja sir and Sastry garu, got bored to praise these two again and again, they are too excellent. Chitra gets her third song in the album, now a days getting 1 song in a album itself is great but she has got 3 songs in one telugu film after so many years, where she used to get all the songs in one film in mid 80's and all 90's. We must be lucky enough to hear that sweet voice again and again. Hats off chechi. But Sadhana sounded too odd among the three singers, her accent was clearly audible making herself very odd. Shreya would save this song I guess, If Sadhana is avoided. Chinmaye and Chitra sounded great. This song also could be rated 5/5 but Sadhana took away the half point.
