Movie: Maamannan (2023)

Music: 'Isaiypuyal' A. R. Rahman
Lyricist: Yugabhaarathi
Label: Sony Music South
Maamannan is an upcoming Tamil language film directed by Mari Selvaraj. Said it's a political thriller & absolutely different as Vadivelu being cast in a very different role. Let's see what the film has on store for us.
Music composed by the maestro himself - A. R. Rahman. Now-a-days he's on a different league, many say that he's back, but core fans of him like me will say that he has never lost his form at all. Something that excited me so much about this film is his music & Vadivelu's comeback. So, as of now the film has 7 tracks all written by Yugabhaarathi except one song which is written by Arivu. Why late, let's peep in.
01. Kodi Parakura β
Vocalists: Kalpana, Rakshitha, Deepthi & Aparna
Rating: 3.5/5
What?!! This' my exact reaction after listening to this song. Rahman is ageing back, he's brought those days of Sangamam & Kizhakku Cheemayile back with this folk touch & also blends the trendy instrumentals. This' a normal song but made perfect, if you ask me how? And what's the difference between Rahman composing this & any others doing such stuff? The answer is - He does everything different, he's not the normal! Listen to those rhythm patterns - one even without looking at the inlay card will tell that this is composed by Rahman.
Whatever, I thoroughly enjoyed the song. Kalpana is back with a bang, her voice in the beginning & in between of the song- dyaamnn! I pity our composers for not properly utilising this bottle full of talent. Other singers do the chorale part, but still voices are pellucid & also the song goes on first gear for the technicality, listen to those Swift notes that Rakshitha songs in first stanza, just top notch. A good songπ

02. Nenjame Nenjame β
Vocalists: Vijay Yesudas, Shakthishree Gopalan & Chorus
Rating: 3/5
One more beautiful song. A typical Rahman styled romance number, all his fans would really embrace on him for this sort stuff. But to all the normal music lovers it's an above average song. Voices of Vijay Yesudas & Shakthishree Gopalan just elevate the song's mood to another altitude. Shakthishree is slowly turning into Rahman's Chithra or Sujatha, coz she's filling up that melodious void that of-late Rahman's songs are missing nowadays, especially from the vocalist's side. One more song for the album π

03. Uthchanthala
Vocalists: Sireesha, Deepthi & Pavithra
Rating: 2.5/5
One more group song with ample folk touch. Rahman now-a-days has got a band of singers & for sure you find them in all his albums & for sure they're doing the backing vocals. Atleast one song in all his upcoming albums is a group song & it's sung by Rakshitha, Deepthi or Sireesha. So, this song didn't offer me any new, but it's interesting. Maybe will work as a BGM in crucial scenes in the film.
04. Maana Maamanna
Vocalist: Arivu
Lyricist: Arivu
Rating: 2/5
A trendy rap song that appeals to all those contemporary yo-yo kids. If provided, I dunno if there's a hyper juncture in the film & this song plays in the film- then am pretty sure the theatres gonna erupt. Otherwise it's a mediocre song. It's not at all in Rahman's template.
05. Veerane
Vocalists: A. R. Rahman & A. R. Ameen
Rating: 2.5/5
Yet another mediocre trendy number. Ameen & Rahman try to bring in all the colours & pomp with their voices but still according to me this song is on a boring side.
06. Raasa Kannu β
Vocalist: Vadivelu
Rating: 3.5/5
One word about this song- it's the present gen's 'Mazhaithuli Mazhaithuli'. It brought back memories for me, when M. S. Vishwanathan sang alongside Hariharan in Sangamam, audience got emotional, same feelings come in when Vadivelu is crooning this folk number. Yugabhaarathi should be credited for such sublime phrases. Those couple of beats that come in every now & then in the song are the skeleton for this song. Rahman when given a situation & asked to do something new - this is how the output sounds.
Almost when the album is reaching a mediocre reach - this song saves from that reaction. I loved this π

07. Jigu Jigu Railu
Vocalist: A. R. Rahman & Chorus
Rating: 2.5/5
A typical ARR'S song & might appeal to only his fans. Am struck by the beautiful instrumentation but still this' is on a toss. Rahman's voice is always a treat to ears but still cannot save this number, coz when a playful song is pulled in & includes chorus from kids group, one expects a song like Kaathu Kaathu or Rangeela Re. But, still to fare this song- it cannot be any better, it keeps getting good and good when you repeat it.
