Diya Audio Review- Tamil (2018)

Movie: Diya (2018)

Director: A.L.Vijay

Producer: Allirajah Subhasakaran

Cast: Naga Shourya & Sai Pallavi

Music: Sam CS

Lyricist: Madhan Karky

Music Label: Lyca

Diya in Tamil, Kanam in Telugu (English: Embryo) is a 2018 Indian bilingual horror thriller drama film directed by A. L. Vijay and produced by Lyca Productions. The film stars Sai Pallavi and Veronika Arora in the lead role, while Naga Shourya portray of male lead.

In early April 2017, A. L. Vijay announced that he would be working on a film starring Sai Pallavi for Lyca Productionsand that he would direct a script he had written "three and a half years ago".He had chosen to cast Sai Pallavi, after another project for Pramod Films, which would have been a Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Charlie (2015) withMadhavan, was suddenly shelved. After securing the actress's dates to shoot the film, Vijay finalised the technical crew to include his regular collaborators such as cinematographer Nirav Shah and editor AnthonyFor Sai Pallavi, it became her first Tamil language film following a series of projects which she dropped out of, she was replaced in or was shelved. She had previously been cast and then replaced in Mani Ratnam's Kaatru Veliyidai (2017), while she opted out Vijay Chander's Sketch (2017). Likewise, earlier, her films Charlie and Rajiv Menon's Saravam Thaala Maayamwere indefinitely postponed. The following month, Telugu actor Naga Shourya, was signed on to make his debut in Tamil films. Sam C.S. was roped as music director, working with Vijay for the first time replacing his usual music director, G. V. Prakash Kumar.
The film was revealed to be completed by September 2017, with Sai Pallavi beginning her dubbing work. Vijay denied that the film was a horror film and stated that the film would explore the "story of a young mother and her four-year-old child", with Sai Pallavi portraying the mother. Still, the film is a horror story with Baby Veronika as the aborted daughter of Naga Shouraya and Sai Pallavi, who takes revenge on the demise of her.
In April 2018, the film's title was changed from Karu' to Diya.

Sam CS composed the music for this film with lyrics of Madhan Karky.
NOTE:The film got released on april 27, but I choose to review it now, because good albums should'nt go unnoticed with the films.

01. Aallalilo

Singer: Swagatha S Krishnan
Rating: 4.5/5

This is the first song in the album, which is a melancholic lullaby. This song is featured on Sai Pallavi and Veronika Arora in the film. This song has all those sweet elements which a lullaby should have. Sam CS has been a promising music director since Vikram Vedha, and here too did'nt miss any opportunity to showcase his talent. The magical violins in the song sounded blissful. Lyrics by Madhan Karky are phenomenal. Instrumentation is all set in the backdrop of thriller-suspense, which is needed. Sam needs all the pat on his back for this wonderful masterpiece. Coming to the vocals Swagatha sounded same like Sai Pallavi, which is a major plus to the song. But instead of all things in a row, the song still lies on the boring side, that is because of the looping beats as a background which take away the consistency. But atlast, this may not appeal to the masses but can  no where made better. Will I recommend it to you, 'Surely Yes'!!

02. Konjali

Singers: Sathyaprakash, Neha Venukopal & JKA Shaalini
Rating: 5/5

This song is a cute romantic duet set in a backdrop of wedding band. Sam changes no form in this song, he uses those same beats as background, but added lot of exuberance to it which clicked on very well. When ever the phrase 'Konjali konjali' came , the experience was blissful. A very well made wedding song!! As usual Madhan Karky is phenomenal again. The folk touch sounded amazing. At end of the song, that harmony with flute is the most marvelous part in the song, it surely makes everyone nod their heads and sway with the tune. Sathyaprakash is the backbone of the song, now'a'days when ever he sings, there is no other singer who could match him. The female lead is as usual frail and dull, but it created no impact because whole light was on lyrics, music and Sathyaprakash. That chorale piece is a sure mention.

03. Karuve

Singer: K.S.Chithra
Rating: 5/5

This is a melancholic song giving a horrific experience, I mean its gloomy in feel, but not bad. This song leaves the listener in a dark feeling. Those violins banging at the background along with those small bells makes the song horrific. Sam rocked this song like anything, the instrumentation is awful with a eerie tune. Madhan Karky once again proves that he is phenomenal. His lyrics are life of the song. Here we go with the voice of evergreen Chithra, she always proves that she is the queen of expressions and will never let any chance miss from her hand. She again proves that she is a perfectionist and a hardworker who never disappoints with her work. With this song she tells us why she has been a legend and why we Tamizians and whole South India embraced on her voice since last three decades. She sings this song with a  sinister feel which is really apt. That humming and expression in the second stanza is a proof for her extraordinary talent. She renders it with beautiful dynamics and grace, which no other singer could do. Hats off Chithra maa!! she is the backbone of the song. Its really great listening to her after many days. Overall a decent attempt.

04. Voice Of Karuve

Performed By 'Chennai Orchestra'
Rating: 5/5

This is the instrumental version of 'Karuve'. This song is rich in instrumentation, and it dose'nt have that sinister feeling which is present in the above one, but has some awful inetrludes led by the chorale group, which sounds as a highlight for the song. Sam uses few bells to brake down the emotion, except the prelude, everything has been changed from the above one. That Nadaswaram, Sax and Clarinet sound very neat like that of Chithra's sweet humming.

05. Sound Of Revenge

Performed By 'Chennai Orchestra'
Rating: 5/5

Once again Sam brings in all those horrific sounds and loud hummings by chorale groups. Even we hear sound of little girl in b/w which is really horrific again. This may serve as the best background piece in the movie, if caught with right visuals. Chennai orchestra again did their best this time. The overall output is preternatural. Whole credit to Sam CS.

Picks Of The Album: Konjali & karuve

OVERALL RATING: 9.9/10

Remarks: A heart warming album, which I did'nt want to miss. So even though it released month ago, I gave a review.  Sam is uprooting to high extents, surely this type of works will lift him up. what ever might be the result of film, this type of works should'nt go unnoticed.
