Movie: Edakallu Guddada Mele (2018)

Director: Vivin Surya

Producer: G. Prakash

Cast: Nakul, Shrikanth & Swati

Music: Ashic Arun

Music Label: Anand Studios

Edakallu Guddada Mele is a cult film in Sandalwood that was made by Puttanna Kanagal. This film is said to be a tribute to the legend, and director Vivian Surya tries to bring some of the problems teenagers face through this bittersweet drama. The film has its moments and has a lot of important topics that are spoken about, but it ends up being a tad too preachy in its approach and the makers have tried to pack in a little too much in one tale, which can get exhaustive for the viewers through the course of the narrative.

The film begins on a very nice note, with the makers showing friendship between four unsuspecting teenage girls from varied backgrounds in a nice manner. The film tries to mirror what one sees in today's world, with a bit of lessons and preaching as well. The second half of the film, especially towards the end, does strike the right chord — that of uneasiness of living in a world like ours. But one wishes the makers had tried to focus on one central issue, rather than skimming around the surface of one too many.

The performances, especially of the young girls, are commendable. The film has many cameos from veteran actors, some of which don't seem to add too much relevance to the narrative. There are few films that touch upon topics related to teenagers and this is one of the few to do so. If you want to watch some bittersweet moments on screen and support a different attempt, you could opt for this film.

Nandini is a neglected daughter of rich parents. Her friends are her lifeline. An untoward incident leaves her feeling lonely. Her parents send her to an estate and a boarding school to get her feeling better. But does she find all the attention and care that she yearns for in her life?

Ashic Arun composed the music for this film with 5 songs. Every song is completely situational. Lets directly go through the music of the film.

01. Mugulunage

Singers: Shreya Ghoshal & Karthik
Lyrics:  Kiran Kaverappa
Rating:  4/5

This first song is a cute romantic duet b/w the leads of the film. We usually come across this kind of songs in every film in this contemporary period. Now'a'days the music has been changed a lot, there is no proper rhythm nor pattern in making a song, they are just mixing words with tunes and inducing small interludes. These kind of songs are just for the sake of visuals and have no repeat value, this all is hollywood culture. So with visuals these lite hearted melodies become a treat and are very effective in telling a part of story in the film. No offence, we have to move with the forthcoming changes.
Coming to the song, this song is like a slow poison it clicks on repeated hearings. Ashic's instrumentation is a treat for ears, he used all those instruments like Harmonium, bazz, guitar, flute etc to make it mellifluous and pleasant on our ears. Coming to lyrics, they are poetic as usual, a commendable job by Kiran. Shreya is the princess offscreen, I always tell this, she is as usual mellifluous and sweet, the magic is in her voice and she uses that to full extent in this song. Karthik joining the princess's show added more pomp and color. They both just elevated the song in their respective styles. Overall a cute song and a well made song.

02. Namde Lifu

Singer: Sangeetha Rajeev
Lyrics:  Lekhak M Siddarth
Rating: 3/5

A routine hifi song made using all those noisy instruments. This song is a short one in that freak out style, which is again contemporary in nature. This song has nothing new to offer and is routine in all aspects. Lyrics went safe. Music is fine, vocals by 'Rocking' Sangeetha are as usual perfect. A song that may work with visuals.

03. Amma

Singer: K.S.Chitra
Lyrics:  Kiran Kaverappa
Rating: 4/5

This is a complete situational song with a mother sentiment. Though we have hundreds of songs and many movies on 'Amma', yet we fall short in words describing her sacrifice and the need that she does to her child. This song is like a tribute to all the mothers. Ashic's music is again in this contemporary style, he mixes words with tune, but this might work out. Those instruments like sitar, piano evoked the right emotion. Interludes stand as a highlight. No matter who writes a song on 'Amma' its always heart warming, Kudos Kiran Kaverappa, he just rocked the song with beautiful lines, the phrases 'Dharani moolani  Jananee, dhamani gudali dwani nee, jeevadharuye naa chiraruni'  stood as a highlight. Here vocals feature the voice of evergreen Chitra, who never disappoints with her rendition. The amount of expression she evokes is unmatchable that no other singer could do. A perfect choice for the perfect song!! though she mastered all these kind of songs, it yet sounds fresh in her voice. Might be Chitra is the only singer who  stands last in the row who could justify a song completely from our generation and there won't come any other singer who could reach her or no other singer who could sing better then her. Hats off whole team !! for putting up an emotional show!!

04. Belakaagidhe

Singer: Shwetha Mohan
Lyrics: Guru
Rating: 4/5

This is the second version of 'Amma' presented with different lyrics. Don't know whats the reason in making two pathos, one with mother's sentiment and the other one with a melancholic theme. Music is the same, there's no difference in two versions. Guru's lyrics are extra ordinary, he just brought the right phrases. Shwetha at vocals, did complete justice to the song. Shwetha and Chitra's versions are equally beautiful, they both aced through vocals and mastered at elevating to a different level with their exceptional expressions respectively. Usually when two versions of same song is presented, comparisons are common, but here there is no need of comparison, both are equally good.

05. Nee Kareda

Singer: K.S.Chitra
Lyrics: Do.Rah
Rating: 5/5

This is one more melancholic song suiting to the situation in the film. Ashic again gave the music with that contemporary style. Nothing to speak about the music, lyrics by Do.Rah are heart wrenching. Coming to the vocals, Chitra she stole the show this time too, she gets a second song in this film and  she never wastes any opportunity to loot our hearts, that expression, OMG!! only she , only she can sing. She tells why she has been a legend and why whole south India embraced on her voice since few decades!! I can say that she literally cried rather then saying she sang. How is it possible for any singer to put their soul like this into the song? even after 30 years, she sounds the same!! A song stood straight with ample support from the legend. Hats off Amma!! hope we can here more from you.

Picks Of The Album: Nee Kareda & Mugulunage

OVERALL RATING: 8/10
