Music: Anirudh Ravichandran

Music Label: Lyca Productions

This Pongal again the superstar is back to enthrall the audience again with yet another action-thriller 'Darbar'. Film is being directed by A.R.Murugudoss casting Nayanathara & Nivedita Thomos as female leads.

All the music is composed by the rockstar 'Anirudh Ravichandran'. This is his second outing with that superstar after a dope album 'Petta'. This album consists of 4 songs & 2 instrumentals. All the lyrics penned by Vivek except one which was written by the rapper Yogi B. So let's directly fare the album.

01. Chumma Kizhi

Vocalist: S. P. Balasubramaniam & Chorus
Lyricist: Vivek
Rating: 3/5

This song is a glorious tribute to the superstar!! There is a strange connection over SPB singing all the Thalivaar's title songs & Anirudh cashes that point to a extent by drawing in SPB into the song. One is immediately reminded of 'Annamalai' song 'Vanthenda Paalkaaran' listening to the pre-lude. Song is more of rhythm based, it's heavily beaten with steel drums & percussions taking over. One eventually feels that the track is getting louder & louder giving very little space to the vocalists!!

Coming to the rendition, SPB always makes us wonder about his energy capacity, he keeps proving time & again that he sounds effortless inspite of his age which is never a factor for him. Inspite of the heavy orchestration SPB manages to bring in the spirit in his voice with lot of grace. His way of rendering, those dynamics & improvisations sounded awful!! Lucky to be living in the era where he is living & singing yet!! Vivek plays safe, yet his lyrics are a boost to the track. Overall it's song is a celebration of Thalivaar's spirit!!

02. Thaaram Maara Single

Vocalists: Anirudh Ravichandran & Arjun Chandy
Lyricist: Vivek
Rating: 1.5/5

When it's a yayy for the first song it's a Nah 👎 for this number. This disappoints the fans as well as listeners. Anirudh brings in that Petta flavour into the song unnecessarily which is intriguing. It's a track which might be a background score used for elevating some action scenes. All the beats, tune & rendition everything sounds like rehash of his old tunes!!

03. Thalivaar Theme

Instrumental
Rating: 1/5

Here's one more track mostly OST which is again styled like in Petta. We listen to almost similar drums, percussions, thumba beats & even feel like situations to appear coincidental.

04. Dumm Dumm Dumm

Vocalist: Nakash Aziz
Lyricist: Vivek
Rating: 2/5

Is this 'Aaha Kalyanam-2' ?? Anirudh is simply programing his own Petta tunes!! Is it the success formula?? If that's true, then this album is an utter disappointment. As I said even the movie's travelling in the 'Petta' styled backdrop, same situations got the same tunes. If not about all these, this is a Dhol baaje mariage song with Nakash Aziz doing the prerequisites, he sounds lovely like usual. Vivek is on a safer side, he is just there to fill in the voids rather then writing some sensible lyrics.

05. Villain's Theme

Instrumental
Rating: 1.5/5

Here's a theme for the antogonist, like we are aware of Anirudhs' BGM, he always strikes gold in doing that , here too the theme givesa sinister & haunting emotion to the listeners, but the thing which is putting this album on a weaker side is that it sounds almost like Petta.

06. Thani Vazhi

Vocalists: Anirudh Ravichandran, Yogi B & Shaktishree Gopalan
Lyricist: Yogi B, Syaan & Senthuszyaan
Rating: 3/5

This is the only saviour in the album with an exception to Chumma Kizhi. This track is mastered in brilliance by the composer. It's a mix of jazz & western with a proper balance b/w pop. So this sounds like every genre, but Iam sure it'll be an addictive on loop. Song speaks about the character sketch of the protagonist, there are phrases like "Arunachalam..Aaditya Arunachalam!!" hinting Thalivaar's name in the film. Yogi is such a support to the song, his rap & lyrics sounded great. Overall this is a praiseworthy composition.

Picks Of The Album: Chumma Kizhi & Thani Vazhi

OVERALL RATING: 4/10

TRIVIA: Album needn't be any better, Anirudh made every track to sing with its soul but every track appeared like a clone of Petta, they sounded too similar. If it has to work with fans then the only thing that has to be done is putting more effort rather then following the success formula!!
