AAA- 6

Hi, hi, hi....it's like a big hi this time!! Every time it gives me immense pleasure to bring up a brand new episode of this series (Amazingly About the Artist- AAA), your love & constant support is always the main impetus to write more & more. With no further hamper lets see what's in!!

A'm attributing this episode to one of the best & legendary composers duo 'Lakshmikant- Pyaarelaal', popularly known as " L & P duo ". You all would have experienced horripilation by right now, I knew!! That duo has that power, such a wonderful combo it is!! This combo is such a great & successful duo which surpassed all the records then & gave a definition of "New era" to Bollywood music.

Lakshmikant & Pyaarelaal are great friends, their successful combination is a remarkable history in Bollywood film music, their domination resulted in music compositions to 750 films in almost more than 4 Indian languages. Lakshmikant died at the age 60 in 1998 & Pyaarelaal aging 79 composes tracks very sparsely yet quoting & crediting his individual works as "Lakshmikant- Pyaarelaal Musical"!! Their friendship is such one which can be a film's story or a bonding that can be etched on a marble with golden letters titling it as "True meaning of true friendship".

Lakshmikant & Pyaarelaal had really tough times in their initial days to prove them as worthy composers. Lakshmikant had to spend his childhood in dire poverty in the 'Vile Parle East Mumbai' slums & lost his father at a very tender age & all the burden of household chores as well as financial accounts were his cup of tea. Lakshmikant being closely associated with his father's friend who is a musician, made Lakshmikant adhere towards music. He was the one who assisted Lakshmikant to learn carnatic music & luckily Kant had an oppurtunity to meet the great 'Mandolin' player- Hussain Ali who accepted Kant as his student & trained him in classical as well as coached him in playing Mandolin.

Pyaarelaal too belonging to poor family had to run his house by the age of 12 by playing Violin at marriages & other musical programs. Pyaarelaal's dream was always to go Vienna (captail of Austria) & join an orchestral group as a violinist as he learnt playing violin & western music from Anthony Gonslaves & he says that he is forever indebted to his guru.

But as always said, faith is a concealed truth, we don't know what destiny has to do with, same happened to these duo composers, they never thought of composing music nor making it through Hindi films yet they had to work as orchestral members or assistant music directors to many Bollywood leading composers like Shiv- Hari, Kalyanji- Anandji, S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman etc. Somehow, luck favored they became music directors ruled the entire Bollywood music.

There is a popular AIR India radio program - Binaca Geet Maala which aired these duo composers' compositions regularly. At an instance Geet Maala used to feature 50% of L-P's compositions, i.e. 15 songs a day!! Airing from normal families, debuting as orchestral members, struggling hard & reaching this stage, what an epic journey it was!! just too inspiring right!!

One more thing talked about L & P duo is about their association with the India's melody queen- 'Lata Mangeshkar'.  Lataji first heard to Lakshmikant's mandolin at a radio concert in Colaba, which made her fall in awe for his talent. Thereafter she recommended this duo to popular music directors like Shiv- Hari & S. D. Burman & hence which lead to rise of L & P duo. They both say that they are forever indebted to this melody queen for her gestures & humane nature. And also L & P had close association with legendary singer- the king of Bollywood songs- Md. Rafi saahab who has sung nearly 380 songs to them. Lataji making a mark has recorded more than 720 songs, which is the highest number that she would have recorded to any music director. Aashaji takes the next place however, even she has got to sing highest no.of tracks to this duo. Kishore Kumarji has the fame of recording highest songs as a male singer, nearly 400 songs.

01. Chahunga Main Tujhe

Movie: Dosti- 1964
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultaanpuri
Vocalist: Md. Rafi
Language: Hindi

I remember, my Mom being a great fan of old Bollywood classics, Lataji & Rafiji, she always played their tracks in our stereo & almost when I was 3 or 4, daily I slept only when she sang a song & irony is that everyday she sang this song, so that I slept peacefully!! Cutting it right there, this composition is such an authentic track which will always make a place through few top evergreen Indian songs. L & P won their first filmfare for this track. Back in 1964 & yet enthralling audience in 2020 is something to note & all the credit to this duo. L & P always brought in voices that almost looted every listeners heart, one such voice is Rafi saahab's voice- what a voice sir!! still a fan of yours!! This song, picturisation, tuning & lyrics deserve an Oscar.  I don't know if there is anyone who has disliked it, but there is no one who has'nt liked this track. Like the track L&P remain evergreen!!

02. Sathyam Shivam Sundaram

Movie: Sathyam Shivam Sundaram- 1978
Lyrics: Pandit Narendra Sharma
Vocalist: Lata Mangeshkar
Language: Hindi

When we talk about legends we talk about Lataji & when we talk about some cult classics we talk about this song!! And what to speak about these maestros, I love them, you love them & every one loves them. Their tuning & this song will definitely have a different impact on listeners leaving them with an expression- UNPRECEDENTED!!
And here's a short 'behind the scene story' for this song- L&P's favorite female artist is Lataji, forever & forever, they just respect her & adore her like none others in the world do. Like to everyone's usual thought L&P wanted to record this masterpiece in the legend's voice as they believed that there is no other vocalist who can justify their composition like Lataji does. That day it was the first recording for the album & you all know how spectacularly recording of first song in the album crops up in those days back in the memory lane of 19's era!! So, director was in a hurry to shoot the song, so all the crew & cast assembled at the recording theater, lyricist was done with his lyrics & Lakshmikant & Pyaarelaal made sure that all their instruments sounded in the right tempo yet there was a delay in finishing the work, director was anxious to know the reason for the delay, then L&P apologized for the delay & explained to the director that they were waiting for Lataji. You all know who's the director- Rajkapoor & he asked to record the song with some other vocalist. (At that time Lataji was in regards with disputes with Rajkapoor), so she was reluctant to record the song. But L&P did'nt wish to replace the vocalist, they told that they wished to cancel the recording rather than recording the song with some other vocalist. At last after some hustles & bustles Lataji accepted to sing the song, she came to the studio in vexation & recorded the song in single shot & went away & rest is the history!! Now enjoy the essence.

03. Tere Mere Beech Mein

Movie: Ek Duujhe Ke Liye- 1981
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
Vocalists: Lata Mangeshkar & S. P. Balasubrahmaniyum
Language: Hindi

This film is a debutantes film, Kamal Haasan, SPB, Baalachander made their debut in Hindi through this film. Talking about the song- you all will ask me to write nothing, I know, coz it's so popular & I cant' spoil it's essence with my prolonged & unnecessary explanation!! Here this song too has a story, are you ready to read along? Then go through this.
Baalachander planned to remake his Telugu blockbuster- Marocharitra (1978) in Hindi, so Kamal Haasan is here & he replaced MSV with L&P in the music section. Baalachander recommended SPB to the duo, first they were too happy to listen to him, as he sounded young, mellifluous & perfect, then they asked SPB to prep himself with the lyrics & they informed him that he would sing alongside the legend Lataji. SPB was overwhelmed & he wrote his part of lyrics & starting rendering it in front of the mic, aftermath singing 2 lines in Hindi, L&P  were enraged listening to his poor Hindi diction & accent, so they asked their assistants to throw this singer out of the room quoting that "He is a Madraasi & his accent in Hindi is damn poor & they just want this singer to be out of their sights!!". After a while, when they reverted back to normal, Baalachander convinced the duo to accept SPB as the main vocalist in the film as the film required a voice which did'nt know Hindi as the protagonist in the film plays a "Non- Hindi speaker". Now coming to the song, SPB sang all the songs in the film & won his second national award for his efforts. Like I told before just enjoy the essence.

Vocalist- SPB

04. Jhumma Chumma De De

Movie: Hum- 1991
Lyrics: Aanand Bakshi
Vocalists: Sudesh Bhosle & Kavitha Krishnamoorthy
Language: Hindi

Amitaab Bachchan's career best song right?? Probably, one among his bests. Like when we listen to a particular name we are flashed with many memories, like that when reminded of L&P and Aanad Bakshi's combo, we are just struck with this peppy number. Those party beats, foot-tapping rhythm & rustic vocals- these elements in the song just showcased that L&P aren't just melody based composers but also they can compose absolutely a typical rock & pop too. This film-Hum & them (L&P) we willn't forget some great memories like these. Enjoy this lovely song.

05. Dhoom Taana

Movie: Om Shaanti Om- 2007
Lyrics: Javeed Akhtar
Vocalists: Shreya Ghoshal & Abhijeeth
Language: Hindi

This happened after Lakshimakntji's death!! Pyaarelaalji whenever composed music individually he credited it like "L&P's musical" like told before. So, Om Shaanthi Om such a huge budget film of our times made sure it touched all the eras as it is a period age film, so they approached Pyaarelaal ji to assist this song's arrangements, actual composers were Vishal & Shekhar. Just to remind we did'nt forget this amazing duo, he was approached to assist this song. After everything, this song & Shreyaji's voice is a treat to watch & listen.

Love you loads & respect- Lakshmikant & Pyaarelaal ji!!
