Amar Singh Chamkila- Audio Review- Hindi (2024)

Movie: Amar Singh Chamkila (2024)

Director: Imitaaz Ali

Production: Window Seat Films

Music: A. R. Rahman

Lyrics: Irshaad Kamil

Music Label: Saregamapa Music

'Amar Singh Chamkila' directed by Imitaaz Ali doing much well in OTT with positive reports all over- the director who's fascinated over love stories, off track directs a biopic on real-life Punjabi renowned singer- Amar Singh Sandlia aka Chamkila known for his  dirty & ugly songs & also for absolute fame in the Punjab folks. But, no more details in this review- confining it to just audio review & refer to the movies section for full review on the movie.

The 'Mozart of Madras' A. R. Rahman has been roped to compose music for this film like always in Imitaz Ali's films with all lyrics written by Irshaad Kamil. I was way excited looking at the inlay board as am super confident that 'Rockstar' days are gonna come back. But, when I was watching the film- I felt that it was way too good & beyond my imagination. This is a film that is relating to a music artists' life & what more can we expect than good songs? But, too everyone's surprise it is not the old Chamkila's songs coming back on to the silver screen but Rahman's magic being woven on screens. How nice to have Rahman- a Madrasi composing music for a Punjabi based film?! I thoroughly enjoyed the album, this is something that I loved like anything in recent times. No more delay- delving in....

01. Ishq Mitaye

Vocalists: Mohith Chauhan
Rating: 4/5

The stunning combo of Rah X Mohith is back with yet another banger, I was not expecting any song in this film without this voice. Like usual the nasal voice of Mohith just breezes too cool. The poetic lyrics of Irshaad evokes some sense of nativity which we are missing off-late in Bollywood, like who else other then Imitaaz, Rahman & Irshaad can bring back the good olden days with some good lyrics & great music suiting the situation. Like usual Rahman has some signature beats & hook lines to make us groove to the peppy track. Like Rockstar's Phir Se Udd Chala or Tamasha's Matargashti- this is Chamkila's Ishq Mitaye.

02. Naram Kaalja

Vocalists: Alka Yagnik, Richa Sharma, Yashika Sikka, Pooja Tiwari & Chorus
Rating: 4.5/5

The much awaited 'Chamkila' brand song in Rahman's template is here. ARR is just too good- his command over various styles of music qualifies him as a legend time & again. This is a song sung by middle-aged women in the film supporting Chamkila's songs with ting of dirtiness filled all over this song. It is wired that songs speaking about extra marital affairs, sex, drugs, alcohol, desires too openly- but that is how it was back then in Punjab, so is this song. The song opens with the word- 'Lajja'  & defines the opposite of it- pats to the lyricist for bringing in up such sensitive matters with subtle words & lines.
Alka Yagnik

Coming to the vocalists, the legendary Alka Yagnik who's barely heard in today's films is back with a bang. Her voice has aged much- but still fans are always in awe for her. When you have a song sung by elderly women in picture & who else can think of positioning Alkaji for such a song other then ARR? Like the great Lataji- Alka's voice too sounded too older then her voice in her late 50's - early 60's , but the genius in Rahman uses that voice in a neat way covering up the situation. Richa Sharma was under utilized by Bollywood & yet she's to get her due, so she's singing this. The other singers just do the chorale portions in the song. This can be a nice dance song for some 'Dhol Bhaja'. I can relate this to Saathiya's 'Chalka Chalka' song.

03. Tu Kya Jaane

Vocalist: Yashika Sikka
Rating: 3.5/5

Yet another situational & this time on the character Amarjyothi portrayed by Parineethi. This aint different from ARR's templates in terms of music or instrumentation. A beautiful melody that is staying in our hearts for a longer time. Yashika gets a song that might have gone to Jonitha or Shwetha Mohan & she does apt justice.

04. Baaja

Vocalists: Mohith Chauhan, Romy, Suryansh, Prince Indrapreeth Singh & Chorus
Rating: 5/5

The best song in the album is here. Starts smoothly with some Punjabi lines which is like a sufi & later the beats take on like a banger & chorus starts leading the song until the main part of the song starts & there Mohith just eats away the song like a piece of cake. The feeling that this song leaves us in after first listen is something indescribable. ARR & chorale songs have a special place in everyones' hearts, say Muthu or Jodha Akbar or Kochiyaadan or PS- any film which has songs to define majesty & ARR takes the stage. He's on fire in composing such numbers. This is more or less a title song & gives introduction to Chamkila.

05. Bol Mohabbat

Vocalists: A. R. Rahman, Kailash Kher & Chorus
Rating: 4.5/5

Yet another blockbuster in the film. These songs are so effortless in ARR's voice, for the first time someone overshadows Kailash Kher's throaty voice just like that. A film talking about a real-life character, 1984 Bluestar operation, Anti-Sikh riots etc & this situation- so this is when songs like these are born. Appeals at the very first listen itself. ARR is just killing us with his kind of music even after 30yrs of industry. Legend for a reason.

06. Vidha Karo

Vocalists: Arjith Singh & Jonitha Gandhi
Rating: 5/5

Arijith Singh
A beautiful climax song. ARR & melodies- why should I even pair something like this- give him any genre & he's ruling it like a king. This song will leave any of us teary eyed, the emotion is too high. You hate Chamkila or love him or don't even know him, but still when this comes towards the end in the titles along with the pictures- tears roll down our cheeks. Apart from the video, the audio is too pleasing. ARR hasn't given anything new, this is his template- but still it sounds so fresh & emotional. Arijith Singh is king of expressions no doubt & this is his kind of song & he just adds the icing on the cake with his vocals. Jonitha however is a mismatch here, she's not able to match Arijith here, she fades away with feeble vocals, my opinion is that ARR should have gone with Chitra or Shreya Ghoshal- who could have elevated the song to a different altitude. If not for anything, this can be heard for the sake of rustic vocals & subtle instrumentation with sublime lyrics.

OVERALL RATING: 9/10
